baby stuff
I had my obgyn appointment today. I'm now at 34 weeks and I have to start going every two weeks now. It was boring as usual. The baby is still in the breech position. Hopefully, she'll turn or I'm probably looking at a c-section. The doctor didn't recommend a breech delivery for me because of how big Ro boy was. He said there was still plenty of turning time but if she didn't then we could go in and rotate the baby at the hospital. However, he thought that would be hard (i.e. Painful for me) with me as well because I have a lot of stomach muscle tone. I could get an epidural though. He said it's easier when women are not very muscular around the stomach. That was news to me. I wouldn't have said I had good stomach muscle tone. I used to pre-motherhood, but not since. I got back to a flat stomach but I would not say muscular. So... Yeah. Weird.
Anyhow, we're still pondering over names. I was feeling really depressed about it yesterday because nothing has really grabbed me or if it has it doesn't last more than a day or two. I really felt like we'd be calling her the Nameless One for real or something. However, I'm feeling more hopeful today and I'm interested in the name Simone. I like the name and it goes with our last name. I checked the Social Security website and it's not popular either, which is good. I wouldn't name a kid anything in the top 100. It amazes me that every year approximately 25,000 families a year have a daughter and name her Emily. It's been the number one name since 1996 and in the top 10 since 1991. That's whole lot of Emilies.
Currently, Simone is ranked down in the 500's somewhere. I asked my mom if she liked it and she said "It's so French.", which made me laugh. Our last name is French so it sounds pretty good with it. I don't know. We'll kick it around for a few days and see how we feel about it then. I really like the name Zoe but it's in the top 100 and it's the name of an obnoxious yellow puppet on Sesame Street.
The Social Security name site is really interesting. I can't tell you how many people have told me I should name the baby a good old fashioned name or they tell me they just love old fashioned names. After looking at the sorts of names that were popular from the 1900s to the 1940's, I'm really not sure what these people are talking about. I hope names like Mildred, Ethel, Gladys, Bertha, Edith, Mabel, Elsie, Myrtle and Gertrude don't make a comeback. There are some old fashioned names that are nice (Grace, Emma, Stella, Frances) but more than half are actually pretty awful and well deserve to be buried in the past.
Of course, there's stuff on the recent lists that I think is awful as well. I hate weird spellings of common names and that's a very popular trend. These days names like Madison, Caitlin, and Madeleine are on the list multiple times because of different spellings. If you remove all the weird spelling variations, there's actually less names on the list now than back in the old days. I find that ironic for some reason.
